2024 Gelding Clinic

  • Connecticut Draft Horse Rescue 113 Chestnut Hill Road East Hampton, CT, 06424 United States (map)

CDHR is sponsoring our 12th Annual Gelding Clinic on Saturday, April 20th, 2024 (rain date, Sunday, April 21st). Since the start of this vital program, CDHR has helped over 121 equines and horse owners in need with the issue of unwanted horses.

Veterinary students from Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University, under the direct supervision of both Tufts and local veterinarians, have all graciously volunteered their time and expertise to perform the gelding. The students gain hands-on experience performing pre-surgical exams and acting as surgical assistants.

Your generous donations provide funding for the clinic for owners who might not otherwise be able to afford the procedure. The program was developed based on the philosophy that the castration of a stallion will help prevent accidental, backyard, or overbreeding, thereby reducing the number of unwanted horses being born.

Pre-registration and pre-payment are required. Please note: We will be closed to the public on this day.

Unwanted horses pose a significant problem in our community. They often end up neglected or abandoned due to financial constraints or irresponsible breeding practices. By offering affordable gelding services through our annual clinic, CDHR aims to address this issue head-on.

The involvement of veterinary students from Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University ensures that each procedure is performed with utmost care and professionalism. These students are eager to learn and gain practical experience while contributing to a worthy cause. By supporting our clinic through your donations, you not only help horse owners in need but also contribute to shaping future veterinarians who are well-versed in equine healthcare.

The cost of $125 covers all necessary aspects of the procedure, including anesthesia administration by trained professionals, the surgery itself, pain medication for the horse's comfort, and a penicillin injection to prevent infection. This comprehensive package ensures that each horse receives the best possible care during and after the procedure.

Pre-registration and pre-payment are required to ensure smooth operations on the day of the clinic. By doing so, we can efficiently manage resources and provide a seamless experience for both owners and horses.

CDHR's 12th Annual Gelding Clinic is an essential program that addresses the issue of unwanted horses in our community. With your generous donations, we can continue to provide affordable gelding services to horse owners in need.
