In Memory of Liberty
April 14, 2024

Liberty was among the most loving, sweet, and gentle mares we have ever rescued.

When we save a horse, we often wonder what their history is. We don’t have to wonder much with Liberty because her body clearly tells us her story. We rescued Liberty at our auction trip in July of last year. She stood out so much at the auction - this beautiful, lean, tall blonde in a sea of darker horses- it was impossible for her not to catch your eye. You can follow her scars to envision the tack she wore for hours on end and every day, no doubt. Her collar indent was so very deep. You could slide your hand down her left side to feel her old, poorly healed broken ribs. Her joints were riddled in arthritis and her ligaments were essentially disintegrating quite rapidly. Through all of that, she was such a very good girl, no doubt the reason her body is so literally beat up and worn out.

Every single one of our lives is better for having known and loved her. If her heart and soul could have kept her going she would have been able to live forever but her poor body was failing and rapidly. Despite all our best efforts, medical care love, and her best friend Indy - there was nothing left to do but set her free from her pain. Liberty passed peacefully with a kiss from Indy in her last moments and he was by her side the whole time.
